All About You

(Please forgive me for this post – its the first attempt at blogging via iphone! My internet is struggling tonight!)

This past Tuesday, I drove to Oklahoma City to co-host KSBI 52’s All About You. It was another early morning (by now, I think we’ve established that I’m not a morning person!), as I arrived at 9:45 am. Somehow, I missed the memo that the show had moved from 10 am to 11 am. When I arrived, I checked my @MissSoonerSt Twitter and found a message from my friend Michael, who works at KSBI, letting me know about the change. Since I was an hour early, I headed to the nearest Starbucks for a mid morning pick me up (new favorite: light caramel frap!). I made it back to the station around 10:45 and headed in to meet Kealey while getting mic’d!

I probably haven’t mentioned this, but my original major was broadcast journalism! Needless to say, this was right up my alley. I loved journalism, but found my niche in public relations, so co-hosting the show was a nice preview of what my life could have been like! We discussed the upcoming Miss Oklahoma pageant and Twenty Something Magazine June issue. If you’ll remember, KSBI asked me to co-host as the winner of the June Twenty Something magazine contest! We then spoke with John of St. Anthony’s about the hospital’s night time 5k. I’m anything but a runner (I mall walk on the treadmill!), and they played a clip of Phoebe from Friends running…much like my own style! After watching that, you’ll completely understand why my bum ankle and I choose the mall walk!

Kealey and I also spoke with JaNiece, the producer of All About You. JaNiece recently went to Las Vegas and had several tips from Cosmo about how to stay happy, a straw she picked up in Sin City, and the ever interesting topic of whether I had a boyfriend or not. It’s apparently a popular question among any age, not just the children I speak to about my platform! Haha, Kilpatrick Oil was also represented by a college friend, Ross. The company recently acquired an interesting piece of art, which is on display in front of the building. Ross was actually on my Student Alumni Association Class Ring committee, so it was nice to see a familiar face!

Cloth diapers arrived on the set from The Changing Table. We learned so much about the diapers, baby toys, and even teething necklaces. I had no idea there was such a huge market for clog diapers or even how they were used! With a Pre-k class coming my way in a few months, I don’t expect them all to show up perfectly potty trained so diaper information in general may be useful as an early childhood teacher! This isn’t the first time I had heard of cloth diapers. My capstone client, MommaCounts, is an Oklahoma City based group buying site for families and the company had offered deals for similar businesses in the past!

Later we discussed my plans to work with Teach For America and Kealey spoke with a trainer about how to become swimsuit ready. I had such a fun time at KSBI and really enjoyed co-hosting the morning show. Everyone at the station was very warm, making it seem like a wonderful job. Even the camera crew kept us entertained with interpretive dancing between takes! Be sure to check out the videos on Ok52 All About You’s Faceboon and on the KSBI website!

Twenty Something Preview

If you’ll recall a previous post, I was selected as the Twenty Something Magazine winner for the June Twenty Something Girl contest. Yesterday I met Kelsey and Bethany, the editors, in Oklahoma City for the photoshoot. If you don’t know these two, you need to, because they are beyond fun! Bethany is an amazing photographer (check out her work in the magazine) and Kelsey is not only a sylist, but a Thunder Girl! I really enjoyed getting to know them and trying my hardest for a serious face every now and then (Leigh, Larry: I think you would agree that I am seriously not serious. Maybe ever.) Jamy did my hair and make up which was faaaaabulous! I was dressed up like a pin-up girl – red lipstick and all! They were surprised to learn that I had never worn red lipstick, just recently learned how to curl my hair, and my ears are not pierced. And I call myself a pageant competitor?

We had a wonderful time and here are a few sneak peeks at the shoot, featured in the upcoming June issue. Be sure to like their Facebook page and check out their website to view the magazine!

Twenty Something Magazine – WINNER!

I had to hold myself back from doing a little Charlie Sheen hash tagging (#winning), but considering Charlie and I have so little in common…it didn’t seem necessary!

I’m thrilled to relay that this morning on KSBI (a local Oklahoma station) the magazine announced ME as the winner of their June Twenty Something Magazine Girl search! If you remember from a few weeks ago, I posted a link to voting. Several young women were selected as finalists by the magazine and the public was asked to vote. The winner receives a photo shoot in the magazine along with an article about how they are a fun twenty something girl who is contributing to the betterment of our community.

Here’s an example of one of my pageant friends, Morgan Woolard, who is the May Twenty Something Girl. Morgan and I first met at Miss Oklahoma Teen USA in 2006. As it turned out, USA wasn’t for this short legged gal, but Morgan won – and it was her first pageant! It was one of those moments where you were truly thrilled for the winner and couldn’t have been happier if you’d won yourself. I really enjoyed getting to know her and have cheered her on ever since. She truly has a wonderful spirit and will do great things in life.

The magazine, created in April, is available online, so be sure to check it out. Look for me in next month’s issue!

Healthy Living

Tonight, I went into the kitchen ready to grill up my normal chicken and veggies, but really wanted a bit of variety! If you know me, you know I love to bake. I make cupcakes for everyone, dabble in cookies for kicks, and have a Butter Nut Cake that no one can turn down. When it comes to cooking, I’m a bit new to the game! Baking has always been so simple…combine ingredients and throw it in the oven. Cooking seems to take a little more attention, time and patience (three things I do not have when it comes to food!).

I follow several recipe and cooking sites through Twitter, but can never find the kind of recipes I need. My new best friend is the crock pot, but I don’t always have time to whip it all up in the morning and let it stew all day. Basically, I need some good recipes for chicken, turkey, vegetables and snacks which are low in sugars, carbs and fats. I seem to be a proteinatarian right now, and am afraid I may turn into a protein bar soon! Luckily, I’ve been eating nothing but turkey and chicken for years now (can we say picky eater?) and have yet to start clucking! I sometimes forget to eat meat, so anything which is quick and simple for meat would be fantastic. Any great recipes you’d be willing to share? I know you’re looking at this blog…might as well pass on a great, healthy recipe. If you do, I’ll make it and share on the blog!

Also, you can vote until April 25th for the June Twenty Something Magazine Girl! Since June is the month of Miss Oklahoma, I would really appreciate your help in making Miss Sooner State the featured twenty something! Keep checking back (or subscribe!) because I have A LOT of speaking engagements and appearances coming up in the next few weeks. I love being able to share my platform with others and create safer social environments!

Twenty-Something Girl

This morning I received a message with VERY exciting news! I was selected by Twenty Something Magazine, a new Oklahoma based publication, as a candidate for the Twenty Something Girl! Each month, the magazine features a local young woman who is highly involved in the community and making a different in the state of Oklahoma. I am beyond honored to be recognized as a nominee, and have to thank the University of Oklahoma Pi Phi’s for selecting me! Oklahoma has a great market for a magazine of this nature and you can even check out the first edition online. Click this link – Twenty Something Magazine Girl – to vote!
